The design-build team of Watry Design and Hensel Phelps was selected to design a 7-level parking structure that will support Kaiser Permanente’s new state of the art acute care hospital in the historic Railyards community of Sacramento.
The parking structure, which will serve both patients and staff, will be sited adjacent to the hospital to provide convenient access. Watry Design collaborated with Folonis Architects to integrate the facade, which will feature perforated metal panels distributed on all 4 sides of the garage to provide a backdrop for signage and highlight the three vehicle entries. Special lighting in the stair and elevator tower will create a wayfinding beacon to assist patients in finding their destination quickly and smoothly.
As the garage is nestled against a hillside, the team took advantage of the topography to create entry and exit options on both level 1 and 2. Dynamic signage at each entry will display the available spaces on each level, minimizing circulating and idling while easing patient stress over finding an available space. For staff who cycle to work, a bike enclosure will be provided on the first level.
Pedestrians will exit the structure onto path that provides a direct connection to the hospital. Both ADA and EV ADA are distributed on the first two levels to provide convenience to patients while also minimizing the mass of the facility by reducing the heights of the remaining levels that don’t require ADA height clearances. Staff will also be able to take advantage of a security badging office on level 2.
Sustainable features include 69 EV charging stations available on day 1 and an additional 225 EV-capable stalls on all levels. The garage will also include infrastructure for the future installation of photovoltatic panels.
